Plan The Space

Before you get started, you need to know the dimensions of your space if you’re to maximise every inch of it. Cramming all your belongings into your room is a recipe for a cluttered and stuffy space, so it’s time to get the tap to measure out. This saves time to constantly rearrange your furniture to find the best arrangement.

If you’re working with an awkwardly shaped bedroom, you can use CAD design software to accurately map out your room. This will ensure that you’re able to freely move around your bedroom furniture and help you decide where you’re going to place each item.

Map out key pieces of furniture and experiment with the position of the bed, nightstand, bedside table lamp, and any wardrobes or shelving for the optimum floor space in your bedroom layout. Always make sure there is room to open your drawers, and there is room to sit at your dressing table.

You can also do this with graph paper, and even cut out cardboard to layout on the floor to check door swing and window coverage. It goes without saying, the more of the existing furniture you use, the less your bedroom redesign will cost. You can also consider repainting some to fit the new colour scheme and breath new live into it. This also resonates with eco-friendly materials and sustainable design practices, to recycle rather than throw out.

You also need to know if you can work around your current fixtures and fittings before you redecorate. This includes plug sockets, although a 4-way extension could resolve this if you can access it from the side of the bed without creating a trip hazard.

If money is no object, I’d be looking at getting some bespoke fitted wardrobes, even without an alcove recess to fill, they can really make good use of available space and increase the value of your home.

Picking colour schemes is usually one of the hardest decisions

Picking The Colour

What’s something that will make or break your bedroom idea being successful? It has been and always will be the colour scheme. As such, get a mood board together to help you decide on the colour scheme you want for the space. Blues and greens work particularly well depending on the tones, hue and shade.

Some colours are better suited to creating a calming atmosphere and choosing the right one can be a great exercise in self-expression. For instance, colours that promote optimum rest and relaxation include warm pastels and soft neutrals. Sky blue is also a very popular choice for many since it mimics tranquil waters.

The colour you choose will set the tone of your entire room, and you’ll be looking at it every day, so take some time to make the right decision. Opting for a versatile colour will help you in the future if you want to redecorate again, and match your pillows, decorative rug and bedding theme.

How to Paint the Room

Other than buying new furniture and accessories, painting the room is probably one of the more expensive thing if you hire a painter and decorator. Obviously doing this yourself is one of the more cost-effective ways to achieve a redesign. Small rooms can be done in a day, but try to avoid repainting the ceiling unless required.

For the novice, forget a feature wall and do all the same colour, get yourself a roller and a thin paint brush for cutting in. Place down some old curtains or something to protect the carpet. Whitewash the wall, and let it completely dry by leaving a window open. The cut in around the skirting board and ceiling allowing you to cover the walls with a roller in an up and down motion.

You can use frog tape, but I find this can peel the old paint off. Plus, if you move the brush firmly in a fluid movement you’d be surprised how clean your lines look from distance. Any paint on the glossy skirting board will easily wipe off if you are quick too, so it’s only polystyrene coving or the ceiling to worry about. Usually two coats of a good quality paint is enough, and you may not need to cut in more than once.

Add Storage

Clutter and mess don’t lend themselves to a restful night’s sleep, so adding some extra storage to your room should be a priority. Without the right amount of storage, your room’s aesthetic could fall flat, so giving every item a home will keep things looking the way you want.

If you’re worried about storage impacting the style you had in mind, there are plenty of hidden bedroom storage ideas. You could add storage bins above your wardrobe or under the bed to make the most of your space. Popular is an Ottoman bed for spare bedlinen, which you can find in a variety of colourways and styles.

As part of the bedroom design, you may want to create a focal point in the room. You could create a feature wall with wallpaper, usually behind the headboard, but you can also do this with wall art.

Ways To Personalise

The bedroom is arguably the most personal room in the house, and your stylish décor should reflect this. Adorn your bedroom wall with photos of your family and friends, or snapshots of your most memorable moments together.

This is also a great opportunity to show appreciation for your favourite parts of pop culture. You could attach artwork or posters of your favourite music artist above your bed or show your appreciation for some small business art prints.

Think About The Lighting

The best use of bedroom lighting is to create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere while also providing sufficient task lighting for activities such as reading or getting dressed. Use a layer combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a well-balanced and versatile lighting scheme. For added versatility, consider incorporating day and night blinds, which allow for precise light control throughout the day.

This will allow you to adjust the lighting levels based on your needs and mood, especially if you have a dimmer switch fitted. Bedside lamps or wall-mounted sconces can also provide low ambient lighting and add warmth with light bulbs on a lower wattage. Day-night blinds are another excellent option for bedrooms, as they combine sheer and opaque fabrics to offer varying levels of light and privacy.

Additionally, night and day blinds can help enhance the bedroom’s ambience by allowing you to switch between complete privacy and natural light effortlessly. This layered approach to lighting, combined with versatile blinds, ensures a cosy and functional bedroom environment.

Add In Some Plants

A 2024 interior design trend is biophilic design, which involves using greenery and natural materials in your room. Aside from wooden shelves, plants are an easy inclusion. They improve air quality, release oxygen, and have a calming effect that can reduce stress levels.

Many plants are well-suited for bedrooms due to their air-purifying qualities by removing toxins, low maintenance requirements, and ability to thrive in low-light conditions. Some popular choices include Snake Plants, Peace Lilies (which have beautiful white flowers), aloe vera, and Spider Plants.

Of course, having blackout blinds or curtains is not necessary. A good mattress and bedframe also help you get a good night’s sleep. So, if you have the money, it’s a good investment. You can get more inspiration from our article on how to design a designer bedroom on a budget.
