If you’re looking to update your bedroom without breaking the bank, embracing some do-it-yourself (DIY) skills can save you a considerable amount of money. The more tasks you can manage yourself, the more budget you’ll have to splurge on those more extravagant luxurious items that give your room a truly designer feel.

My top tip is to look at expensive houses on property sites for inspiration, then look at how you replicate at a far lower budget.

Whether you’re painting, installing new furniture, or adding finishing touches, DIY can transform your bedroom into a stylish sanctuary without the high costs of hiring professionals.

Declutter for a Five-Star Feel

Firstly, to ensure that a five-star hotel room appeal, you have to declutter. I know there is a temptation to store essential items such as bed linen and towelling but there is a way to do that without it being a permanent feature of your sleep zone. I’ve gone for an Ottoman bed for this.

Big, bold, and beautiful wardrobes are the key to this new look, and whether you have a free-standing or a bespoke fitted wardrobe, you can make significant savings without compromising the quality or style you are aiming for.

This can also open up a change in layout to see if a different arrangement gives more space, and changing bed position often has quite a transformation.

Vintage can be a timeless piece of furniture

If you are going for the free-standing option, nothing says class and style like vintage which is very chic at the moment. Trowel around those charity shops, visit those reclamation yards and go online as there are definitely bargains to be had out there.

Be brave; if you want ornate, art deco or mid-century, go for it and design the bedroom around it and make it big enough to take clothes, shoes, bags and all the other paraphernalia that can clutter up any master bedroom.

Why not paint the wardrobe and then match the colour to a feature wall or even the headboard of your bed so that it creates a theme. Couple that with curtains in similar colours or even just the same colour scatter cushions to create a layering effect.

Adding Plants

Don’t stop at colour schemes though, as including some big potted plants like palms or ferns will enliven the room as well, providing sweet and pleasant aromas when you wake up. Impressive planting and even some hanging plants will enhance your green credentials whilst improving your mood. I’m glad biophilic design is on trend, as I’ve long stated the importance of greenery.

Curtains And Furnishings

One thing we all need to have in any bedroom is a way to block out sunlight for those very rare lie-ins and early sunrises are curtains.

You can really push the boat out and get a seamstress to make some with your favourite material, but the labour costs alone can sink any budget, so why not look at some of the more upmarket department or furniture stores as there will inevitably be some kind of sale offer on high quality designs and fabrics?

Even if it is some way down the line when you need them, you should take advantage of any offers whilst they are available.

If you have yet to go to any of these stores recently, you will be extremely surprised by the quantity and quality of their curtains, pillows, and soft furnishings.

Patterns and bold colours are back with a vengeance this year, and as before, why not accompany the curtains with the same cushions and bed linen to create a truly flamboyant theme?

Great ideas that will add to the appeal of your bedroom and save you money:

  • Invest in new, stylish furniture
  • Vintage styling
  • Bold colour scheme, tones and accents
  • Feature wall with wallpaper
  • Add greenery with plants
  • One-off pieces of artwork
  • Exotic or luxurious curtains
  • Choose eye-catching bed linens

Choose A Colour Palette That Suits You

Whether you want bright and open or dark and elegant, find colours and furnishings that reflect the bedroom style you crave.

Finishing touches that add affordable elegance can be part of the colour scheme, whilst contrasting textures can and will add layering and depth to your new bedroom.

Adding colour with plants, flowers, throws, rugs, curtains and timeless pieces of furniture will create balance and give the bedroom that special aura that you deserve.

Whichever theme or style you choose, be confident that your bedroom will look so much more appealing and even worthy of the front cover of a glossy magazine if you keep it tidy and clutter-free.

Affordable Ways to Improve Lighting and Flooring for a Luxurious Bedroom

Lighting and flooring play a crucial role in transforming your bedroom into a luxurious retreat. Luckily, there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to enhance both elements without spending a fortune.

Lighting: Create Ambience with Affordable Fixtures

Good lighting is essential for setting the right mood in your bedroom. Instead of splurging on expensive designer lighting, consider these affordable alternatives:

  • Layer Your Lighting: Combine overhead lights with bedside lamps, wall sconces, and accent lighting. A simple pendant light or a statement floor lamp can add elegance without breaking the bank.
  • Use Dimmable Lights: If you’re after a relaxing vibe, invest in dimmable bulbs. These are inexpensive and offer flexibility for different moods, whether you want bright light for daytime or soft, ambient light for the evening.
  • Add LED Strip Lights: For a modern, high-end touch, consider installing LED strip lights along the edges of your bed frame or behind furniture. These lights can be easily controlled and provide a subtle glow that enhances the overall ambiance of the room. Personally I prefer old school fairy lights, which feel a bit less clinical, but each to their own.
  • Statement Lampshades: An easy way to upgrade your lighting is by swapping out outdated lampshades for more contemporary designs. A stylish lampshade in a bold colour or texture can instantly elevate your room’s style without costing a lot.

Flooring: Affordable Alternatives to Expensive Materials

The floor is another key element in any bedroom makeover. While real wood or high-end tiles can be costly, there are several affordable options that offer the same stylish effect:

  • Vinyl Plank Flooring: Vinyl planks have come a long way in terms of style and quality. Available in wood, stone, and other finishes, they are easy to install, durable, and a fraction of the cost of hardwood or tile flooring. They also mimic the look of natural materials, making them a great option for a luxe look on a budget.
  • Area Rugs: For a quick and budget-friendly way to add luxury to your hard floors, invest in a plush area rug. Choose one with a rich texture, such as shag or wool, to create a cosy and stylish feel. The right rug colour can tie your entire room together and make the space feel more opulent plus be warm underfoot for when you get out of bed on a cold day
  • Carpet Tiles: If you prefer the softness of a pile carpet, they are affordable, easy to install, and come in a variety of styles and textures. Plus, they are great for creating custom designs or patterns in your space
